Las Palmas de Gran Canaria Embarks on Ambitious 2025 Paving Plan
In a significant effort to enhance the infrastructure and quality of life in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, the city's municipal government has launched the 2025 Paving Plan, a comprehensive initiative aimed at improving nearly three dozen streets and avenues across the city.
Inauguration and Key Figures
The plan, which kicked off in February, was inaugurated by the Mayor of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Carolina Darias, who visited the works in the El Pilar neighborhood. Darias was accompanied by Carlos Díaz, the Councillor for Roads and Public Works, and Betsaida González, the Councillor for the Ciudad Alta District. The Mayor emphasized the importance of this project, stating that it will significantly improve the lives of residents in the targeted neighborhoods.
Scope and Investment
The 2025 Paving Plan involves an investment of 2.2 million euros and will cover a total area of 82,000 square meters. The project is divided into three phases, each focusing on a different district: Ciudad Alta, Tamaraceite-San Lorenzo-Tenoya, and Centro.
Ciudad Alta District
The first phase, currently underway in the Ciudad Alta District, includes the repavimentation of several key streets. The initial works began with the asphalting of the roundabout at Félix Alonso Suárez and Profesor Reina in the El Pilar neighborhood. Additionally, seven curb ramps have been implemented, and three speed bumps are being created to reduce vehicle speed.
In the La Minilla neighborhood, significant traffic disruptions are expected this week due to the repavimentation of Manuel de León Falcón Street. The street will be closed on Wednesday between Avenida Ansite and Antonio María Manrique, and on Thursday between Antonio María Manrique and Los Arenales (Dr. Alejandro Ramírez roundabout). Nighttime works will also commence on Avenida Ansite, focusing on eliminating architectural barriers and adapting sidewalks for better accessibility.
Other neighborhoods in the Ciudad Alta District, such as Escaleritas, Altavista, and Barranquillo de Don Zoilo, will also undergo similar improvements.
Tamaraceite-San Lorenzo-Tenoya and Centro Districts
The second phase will take place in the Tamaraceite-San Lorenzo-Tenoya District, affecting several streets in the Piletas, Isla Perdida, La Suerte, Cruz del Ovejero, and Ciudad del Campo neighborhoods. Most of these works will be carried out during the day, except for those on the GC-21 road and Galilea Street, which will be done at night.
The final phase will be conducted entirely at night in the Centro District, focusing on the Paseo de Chil and León y Castillo Street, near the Real Club Náutico de Gran Canaria.
Additional Improvements
Beyond asphalting, the project includes several other enhancements aimed at improving safety and accessibility. These include the elimination of architectural barriers, the creation of elevated pedestrian crossings, and the installation of speed bumps to reduce vehicle speeds. The works also involve the repair of pavement damage and the improvement of bike lanes along affected streets.
Broader Context
This initiative is part of a larger commitment by the municipal government to invest in the city's infrastructure. Between 2024 and 2025, a total of 5.1 million euros will be allocated to various paving projects. Last year, the city repavimented 33 streets in Triana, Vegueta, Escaleritas, Casablanca I, and El Lasso, with an investment of 1.2 million euros. Additional works were executed in 2024 in the Schamann and Salto del Negro neighborhoods, among others.
The 2025 Paving Plan is a significant step towards making Las Palmas de Gran Canaria a more livable and accessible city for its residents and visitors alike.
