Successful Municipal Kids Camp in Valverde Delights Community

In the heart of Valverde, a recent municipal kids camp has garnered widespread acclaim for its engaging and culturally rich activities, bringing the local community together in a celebration of tradition and fun.

The camp, held in late December, was a culmination of efforts from various members of the Valverde community. The event was organized by a team that included dedicated individuals such as Estela Mojica and Lily Hernandez, who are Noon Supervisors at Shore Acres Elementary School. This annual event, now in its second year, has quickly become an anticipated tradition.

Cultural Celebrations

A highlight of the camp was the "Pozolada" event, a festive gathering centered around Pozole, a traditional Mexican stew/soup made with meat and hominy. This dish is typically enjoyed during celebrations and holidays, and its various versions, such as Pozole Blanco (white), Verde (green), and Rojo (red), were all represented. Thirteen families and staff members participated in a Pozole contest, with their creations judged by a panel of 20 judges. The overall favorite was a red pozole made by parent Maria Orozco, who was crowned the 2024 Queen of Pozole.

Community Involvement

The success of the event was largely due to the collective efforts of the community. Teachers and staff donated toys for the children, set up the event, and helped with various tasks. Parents contributed by assisting with decorations and serving food. Even the Contra Costa Sheriffs joined in, donating toys and bikes for the children. The event also featured a Mexican band playing traditional music and a variety of desserts, adding to the festive atmosphere.
